Description
This 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 is an eight-passenger Deluxe model with 23 windows and a canvas sunroof. The selling dealer acquired the vehicle out of Oregon in late 2020 from the widow of the reported second owner, who acquired it in 1989. The Bus is finished in red and gray over gray vinyl upholstery, and power is from a replacement 1.6-liter air-cooled flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes 15″ steel wheels, a Blaupunkt push-button AM radio, and a clock. A November 2020 service included replacing the tailpipe, the windshield and other glass, seals and weatherstripping, brake components, fuel hoses, and tune-up parts. This 23-window Type 2 is now offered with the selling dealer’s service records and a clean Oregon title. The body was finished from the factory in Sealing Wax Red (L53) with Beige Gray (L472) upper portions and bumpers. Features includes a sliding canvas roof, skylight windows, and chrome-finished side mirrors, VW insignia, and trim. During a November 2020 service the windshield and other glass panes were replaced, as were associated seals and weatherstripping. The rubber inserts for the rear bumper rub strips are not present, and touched-up paint chips are noted on the nose. These areas and others are depicted in the photo gallery below.
Gray-painted 15″ wide-five steel wheels wear chrome VW hubcaps and Michelin tires. Braking is handled by four-wheel drums, and the brakes were serviced during November 2020 with replacement hoses, front and rear wheel cylinders, and rear shoes.
Trimmed in gray vinyl upholstery and two-tone side panels, the cabin is equipped with three rows of bench seats accommodating eight passengers. Interior amenities include a VDO clock, green rubber floor coverings, and a Blaupunkt push-button AM radio. Wear is noted on seating upholstery, and piping is missing on the driver-side seat bottom.
A two-spoke steering wheel features a horn button with the VW Wolfsburg logo and fronts VDO instrumentation that includes a 70-mph speedometer and a fuel gauge. The five-digit odometer indicates 32k miles, approximately 50 of which have been added by the selling dealer; true mileage is unknown.
The replacement air-cooled flat-four is said to displace 1.6 liters, and power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. Work in November 2020 included flushing the fuel, changing the oil, and replacing tune-up components as well as the exhaust tailpipe and tip. A 35.74 invoice for the work performed by Zinda & Sons Import Auto Repairs of Vancouver, Washington is provided in the photo gallery.
Additional photos showing the suspension, the chassis, and underbody corrosion are presented in the gallery below.
