Description
This is a rare wooden helmet mask known as a "tshibangabanga" among the Binji, an ethnic group within the Kuba complex of Tribes, DR Congo, central Africa.
This powerful bell-shaped helmet mask was clearly based on the Kuba Bwoom model, the face with prominent brow, large raised forms on the cheeks and powerful nose above jutting mouth. The mask incised with geometric patterns and abrus seeds in resin at the brow, a well carved example with good age and use.
The mask measures 18 x 9 inches and will include a professional display stand.
Ex Allan Stone collection, NYC, New York.
